There are some striking data in the World Giving Report (WGR) for Mozambique in 2025. While 67% is the African average for giving money by any means, the figure was only 46% for Mozambique. This should not suggest that Mozambican people are not generous. Micaia’s work on community philanthropy in Mozambique has revealed an extraordinary extent and diversity of local giving. Much of the giving is of time and goods, and to local and often unregistered ‘charities’ or actions.
This preference for engaging locally and not so much in ‘formal’ charity, might explain why only 6% of Mozambicans give money to charities (compared with the continental average of 24%). However, 42% of Mozambicans reported giving (across all forms of donation) to religion, compared with 29% across Africa. Micaia found that many donors distinguish between giving to, and via, church-linked appeals and giving to NGOs — and, perhaps, this is reflected in the WGR data.
Micaia is planning further research into giving to, and through, churches in Mozambique, a country in which faith is a key factor influencing giving. Despite this speculation about how the data might be interpreted, the fact that more than half of Mozambican respondents (well above the African average) stated that greater transparency and communication from NGOs might make them give more, does suggest that many Mozambicans are cautious about giving to formal charities.
