The survey on which the World Giving Report is based means that we have far more data than ever before. We recognise how valuable the data generated through our World Giving Report survey could be to social scientists within academia, so CAF is opening a rolling call for project proposals.

We opened a time-limited call for the 2025 data and accepted three proposals to use it:

• Dr Cassandra Chapman from the University of Queensland looked at whether culture shapes charitable cause preferences. The paper is currently in the publication process.
• Aakash Thottam, who is also from UoQ and has recently completed his PhD, is looking at reasons for giving and how these vary based on trust, government and region overall.
• Dr Dominik Meier, Dr Diarmuid McDonnell and Professor Pamala Wiepking, of various institutions, are currently in the middle of a multi-level analysis of the WGR data alongside a range of contextual data looking at — among other things —creating country clusters based on their generosity profile and looking into how a country’s generosity impacts the resilience of its charities.

Having tested the water, rather than choosing between proposals, we’re now open to accepting them at any time and judging them on their own merits.

The latest master SPSS files from the donor and / or charity research will be made available. Please note that although CAF will provide the data for free, this will not include access to funding.

Please submit your proposals in no more than 500 words to research@cafonline.org.

You should include:

Your name, position, academic institution and contact details.

• A short pitch of what you want to use the data for and why.
• An overview of the outputs you expect to generate through the project.
• A summary of the outcomes you want to achieve with the work and how you might make this happen.

Please note that a key part of any work will be an easily accessible output (whether this is a report, an infographic or something else), which CAF will work with you on. Our preference is for this to be released prior to any academic publication.
